Bellwork:
  1. Turn in your student information sheets and your social media timelines to the front desk AND pick up a syllabus from the front table. 
  2. Quick Review: Write answers to the following questions in your notes:

Which of these leaders/nations were nationalist? Which were totalitarian? Which were fascist? Which were communist?

Hitler / Germany

Answers: Hitler/Germany = Nationalist, totalitarian (NOT COMMUNIST)

  1. identify the American isolationist and interventionist responses to WWII in Europe and Asia.
  2. explain the meaning and significance of FDR's "Four Freedoms"
  3. evaluate the role of propaganda in changing American public opinion about the reasons for joining WWII


Isolation or Intervention

Isolation = The US should stay neutral in conflicts between other countries and should focus on problems at home to keep the US safe

Intervention = The US should take a side in conflicts between other countries to promote collective international security and democratic values

Activity B: 
You will look at Norman Rockwell's illustrations of the four freedoms. Your group will discuss the assigned freedom and how Norman Rockwell's illustration might change or shape the meaning of that freedom for viewers of his paintings.

Answer the following questions:
  1. What is the subject of the illustration and which freedom does the image illustrate?
  2. What symbols does Rockwell use to represent the freedom? Are they effective?
  3. How does the illustration change your ideas about the freedom that FDR spoke about?
  4. How do you think these illustrations would have affected American's ideas about getting involved in WWII?
